Adopt a German Shepherd Dog

German Shepherd Dog Dog

Glory the Dog needs a home

German Shepherd dogs, as well as the other herding breeds that we have in rescue, are highly active, energetic, working breeds. They require considerable vetting, exercise, socialization, training, leadership and mental stimuli in order to be well-adjusted, well-balanced, and well-mannered dogs.

If you are new to German Shepherds (and other herding breeds), please research the breed to make sure this is the dog for you. We ask that you consider the time and financial commitment that your German Shepherd (or other herding breed) dog will require before applying for one. Please review the section on our website (www.heartlandgsrescue.org) "Is a HUGS Dog Right for You?" for additional information.

Glory is a gorgeous girl who was dumped in rural Missouri in an extreme state of neglect. She was very emaciated, covered up in fleas, and she had lost most of her fur due to an extreme case of untreated mange. Glory was confused, scared, hungry, sick, but very sweet and very, very grateful to be rescued.

When Glory first came into rescue, she required frequent baths, mange treatments, coconut oil & Vitamin E cream frequently applied to soothe her skin, and to aid the healing process. Glory also got to wear the many adorable shirts and other outfits that our wonderful volunteers made or bought for her, to keep her warm and comfortable until her fur grew back :). Glory has long since recovered, has gained a healthy weight, and sports a luxurious long, fluffy coat!

Glory is a super sweet girl who loves to be with her people. She is very loving and loyal. She can be snuggly, and as she comes more and more out of her shell, she is showing us that she can be a little playful and silly too, at times! Glory loves to lay on the couch, go for walks, or even go on a jog. Glory seems to be excellent with cats and kids. She is shy around other dogs, can be bossy and selective with other dogs, and does best with slow introductions and with calm, mellow dogs her size. Glory would be best as the only dog in the house, however, she is beautifully-behaved in public, when out on walks, and is a delightful companion in and out of the house.

Glory is a fabulous girl who will make someone a wonderful, moderate-energy companion. She has plenty and energy, loves long walks, and can definitely keep up with an active family. But she does not require strenous exercise like some of her younger counterparts :). She has a lovely energy level! Glory has some separation anxiety, and will need a heavy-duty crate. She would ideally love to find her forever home with an adopter who is home a lot.

ADOPTING A SENIOR: Seniors have much love and life left to give, and bring much happiness to the wonderful families who offer them a retirement home in their Golden Years. They are calmer, more mellow, require considerably less exercise, and are just as fun, loyal, and loving as younger dogs. Seniors are an excellent choice for first-time GSD owners or for anyone looking for a low-key, mellow companion!

HUGS SENIOR REPEAT ADOPTER PROGRAM: When you adopt a HUGS senior, and later come back back to adopt another senior, you are eligible to pay a reduced senior adoption fee of $125. Thank you for loving these wonderful, very deserving dogs, as much as we do!
